IN THE ROLLING COUNTRYSIDE of old Korea, people used to gather from far and wide for big markets that lasted several days. The tradition continues until today. Everything imaginable can be found there, from common tools and cooking utensils to highly prized, hundred-year-old ginseng roots and baying livestock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One hot summer day many years ago, a young man went to the market to sell the vegetables he had grown on his farm, and to use the money to buy rice. As he concluded his business with the rice seller, he noticed an old monk nearby, standingcompletely motionless in the blazing sun. The monk was wearing heavy winter clothes, tattered and worn, the stuffing bursting out from under old patches. Everyone else in the market had sought shade under trees or the eaves of the merchants\u2019 stalls. Many eyed the strange monk with aversion. But this old monk did not seem to care. He just stood there in the scorching sun, not moving at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat is he, crazy?\u201d the young man thought to himself. \u201cHas he lost his mind? He\u2019s going to faint very soon.\u201d But despite the pounding heat, the monk did not move from his position. He even seemed to be smiling a little bit under his wide straw hat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Later, after the young man had finished with other business, he approached the monk, who had just started to walk around with slow, gentle steps. \u201cSunim, Sunim!\u201d (\u201cVenerable monk!\u201d\u201cVenerable monk!\u201d) the man called, holding his hat in his hands and motioning to the cool of a nearbytree. \u201cExcuse me, but why are you standing out in the sun like that? Shouldn\u2019t you be sitting in the shade?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the old monk did not answer right away. He only smiled at the young man kindly for a moment. \u201cLunch time,\u201d he said, in a voice so soft it was almost indiscernible. \u201cLunch time?\u201d The young man looked around. \u201cIt\u2019s already way past time. Who\u2019s eating?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The monk opened his robe slightly, showing its puffy inside lining. All throughout the fabric, there were thousands of tiny insects, like lice, moving about in the heavy folds. \u201cIf I move too much, they cannot eat,\u201d the old monk said. \u201cSo sometimes I must only stand still while they have their lunch.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The young man immediately suspected the monk was deranged. But when he looked into the old monk\u2019s face, in his eyes there was no humor or strangeness, only compassion. The monk had very calm, clear eyes and relaxed features. His razor-stubbled features seemed to radiate a soft compassion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBut why be so kind to such little creatures?\u201d The monk\u2019s eyes squinted easily, and he said, \u201cDon\u2019t they value their lives just as dearly as you and I do?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Deeply struck with the monk\u2019s extraordinary compassion, the young man immediately put his palms together politely, and bowed deeply to the monk. He asked if he could become the monk\u2019s student. The monk shook his head and, smiling just as politely as before, said, \u201cNot possible.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhy isn\u2019t it possible?\u201d \u201cWhy do you want to become a monk?\u201d \u201cI don\u2019t want to get married,\u201d the young man replied. \u201cI want to find the correct way, and attain my true self. You are compassionate even to these tiny creatures. So I have a very strong feeling that maybe this is the correct way. You are a great monk, and I want to become your student.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMaybe, maybe,\u201d said the monk. \u201cBut a monk\u2019s life is very difficult.\u201d He removed his hat and wiped his brow. \u201cWhere do you live?\u201d \u201cMy parents are dead, so I\u2019m staying with my brother in the next village. I have no place of my own. I want to come with you.\u201d \u201cOK, let\u2019s go, then.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They walked straight up into the mountains, and did not stop for a long time. The old monk did not say anything as they wended their way deep into the mountain valleys. Past rolling streams and over rock walls, stopping only to rest silently together, after several hours of vigorous walking, they finally reached a small mud and stone house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Korea, kitchens are kept apart from the house. In every kitchen is a big black kettle, on a low stand, and a fire is lit under it. The pot is made of iron, and is very, very heavy. In this house, both pot and stand were broken. Fixing the pot requires a lot of heavy work. It also meanspouring a little water into the pot to make sure that it settles evenly in the middle of the rounded bottom. If water does not settle evenly, then any food that is cooked there will cook poorly, and be wasted. It is very difficult work to adjust one of these kettles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pointing at the kettle, the monk uttered his first words since leaving the market together. \u201cPlease fix this.\u201d And just as suddenly, he left the kitchen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The young man was only too eager to begin. Dismantling the old arrangement, he planed, graded, and resurfaced the setting where the kettle fits over the fire. When he had finished, he brought the monk over. \u201cIt is all fixed.\u201d The old monk checked it, eyeing the edges and pouring in a ladleful of water. \u201cNo good!\u201d he said, and dumped out the water. \u201cTry again!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The young man thought, \u201cHmmm, this monk has very keen eyes, so he must see some mistake.\u201d He tried to fix it again, this time being very careful to regrade and adjust every edge of the kettle. Thistime he ladled water into the kettle to check the level himself, and stood up from his work more satisfied than before. He brought the monk over. \u201cSir, now I have correctly fixed the pot.\u201d \u201cOK, I will check.\u201d The old monk squinted at the edges of the kettle, slowly ladling water down the sides. \u201cNo good!\u201d he said, and dumped out the water. \u201cTry again!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The young man became very confused. \u201cI must be making some mistake! Where is my mistake?\u201d he thought to himself. He was very, very confused! \u201cPerhaps it is outside the pot. Maybe the stand is not correct.\u201d This time, he prepared the pot very closely, scrutinizing every inch of it for flaws in the setting. Whatever he had even the slightest doubt about, he fixed completely. Then he checked the whole counter area, where the pot was situated, and made sure everything was clean and neat. He tested and retested the level with several ladles of water. Rubbing his tired back, he again went to fetch his teacher. \u201cSunim, I have fixed the pot! Everything has been checked twice over. Now I am sure you will like it.\u201d \u201cNo good!\u201d the monk said after examining the pot, and dumped out the water. \u201cAgain!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The young man did not understand what was wrong. \u201cThis monk sees some mistake: why can\u2019t I? I know the pot is good,\u201d he thought. \u201cMaybe the kitchen is no good.\u201d So he tore out the entire kitchen, every board of it, and rebuilt it completely, from floor to ceiling. \u201cThere,\u201d he said as he wiped his brow. \u201cSunim cannot help but approve of it now.\u201d So he went to fetch his teacher. \u201cSunim, I\u2019ve fixed the whole kitchen! I am sure there is no mistake now! Please come and check.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOh, that\u2019s wonderful! You are working very hard, so I am very happy. Now I will check.\u201d He went to the pot, dumped in a ladle of water and, seeming almost as if he did not even take the time to see how level the water settled, he shouted, \u201cNo good!\u201d and turned it over again. This happened four times, five times, six, seven,eight times. Each time, the young man thought, \u201cWhat\u2019s wrong with it this time?\u201d and each time the monk answered, \u201cMistake! No good!\u201d and dumped out the water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By now, the young man was getting very angry! \u201cWhere is my mistake?\u201d After the ninth time the water was dumped out, he said to himself, \u201cThis monk is not correct! I don\u2019t care what he says now. This is the last time!\u201d So he just set the pot on the stand and called out, \u201cSunim, I am finished!\u201d When the master came into the kitchen to see, the young man was sitting on the pot, arms folded across his chest. \u201cWonderful! Wonderful!\u201d cried the master, and trundled off to get his meal bowls. That night they ate rice and delicious soup together. The kettle was never mentioned again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zen Master Seung Sahn once commented on this story to his students as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis old monk was testing his student\u2019s mind. That is because Zen means not depending on anything. You must depend on yourself, whatever your own style is. \u201cBut what is your own style? If you keep your opinions, your condition, and your situation, and hold your I-my-me mind, then your correct style cannot appear. So this monk had great compassion, and only tested his student\u2019s mind. \u2018This young man wants to become a monk. But how much does he believe in himself?\u2019 Each time the student fixed the pot, he thought, \u2018Maybe this will pass; maybe that will pass\u2019\u2014much thinking. His mind was easily moved. When the Zen monk dumped out the water, the student believed the monk when he said there was still something wrong with the pot, even when there was no problem. This was all just the teacher\u2019s way of testing the student\u2019s mind, and seeing how much the young man\u2019s mind moved. But the last time, the student just did it. There was no wavering, noself-doubt. His mind did not move in the least.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe Zen monk was also testing his student\u2019s perseverance mind. \u2018This young man likes me, but how much does he want to understand his true self?\u2019 Usually, most people try maybe four or five times to match themselves against the teacher\u2019s wisdom. If the teacher doesn\u2019t approve very soon, many students will say, \u2018I don\u2019t like you!\u2019 and then go away. But when they say, \u2018I don\u2019t like you\u2019 or \u2018I don\u2019t like this teaching,\u2019 what they are really saying is that they don\u2019t like themselves. A good teacher only reflects the student\u2019s mind. If students don\u2019t like what they see, sometimes they blame it on their teacher. \u201cSo a try-mind is more important than any Zen master. If you say, \u2018I can,\u2019 then you can do something. If you say, \u2018I cannot,\u2019 then you cannot do anything. Which one do you like?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(\u201cThis is the reason why we say, \u2018Only go straight, try, try, try for ten thousand years, nonstop.\u2019 Try, try, try means persevere, from momentto moment. It is sometimes called Right Effort. It is the mind that always tries, no matter what, in any condition and any situation. That is already enlightenment. That is already saving all beings. That is already the Great Bodhisattva Way. So trying is very necessary. Then one day, maybe the Zen master will say to you, \u2018Oh, wonderful!\u2019\u201d)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
